Django (1966)

Spaghetti westerns were from the beginning pretty violent and dirty, but Sergio Corbucci takes it to a whole new level with this muddy sadistic red blooded massacre.

The restoration looks pretty good though still grainy. I somehow have forgotten how bad the English dub actually is, but the movie still holds up well. Unlike in Leone’s westerns, there is barely any humor in this. Everyone is cruel, no code of honor or redemption. The ending isn’t such a downer as the The Great Silence, but it isn’t exactly like Django won either.

One of my appreciations for westerns in general is the wide open landscapes. Corbucci doesn’t give me any of that. It is rather claustrophobic from start to finish, with barely any scenes where one can relax. This is not the western frontier in the land of opportunities, but a joyless hellhole.
