The Shooting (1966)

A very minimalist western with barely any plot consisting almost exclusively of outside shots of people on horseback riding through the desert slowly dying in some chase for basically unknown reasons. It is very bleak in a nihilistic sort of way, like everyone has a secret death wish or simply don’t care anymore. Even though the movie is fairly short, we feel the slow death in the desert heat coming slowly and driving the characters over their physical and mental limits. Not quite sure what the intent for the director here was, but it manged to create a very bleak film filled with hopelessness and generally meaninglessness.
