Blind Chance (1987)
The concept of minor changes in events may affect our lives is a theme Kieslowski has explored in several films to varying degrees. In his later works it has been small hints to what might have been, whereas here we get three very different life stories based on whether Wicek catches the train or not. It is a novel concept and Kieslowski challenges how much free will we really have with showing how the same man could turn into a loyal man of the Communist party, an anti-Communist and totally apolitical with just slight variation of events. I am however not totally convinced about the different paths Wicek end up taking, and I like when Kieslowski is a bit more ambiguous with this theme in his later films where it isn’t so concrete as here. However, Kieslowski’s skills as a filmmaker is very much apparent here and it easy to see elements that will later become important parts in Dekalog. I just merely feel he simply got better at everything in his later films, as this is a bit rough in places.
