Perfect Blue (1997)
They sure know how to make animated films in Japan. I love movies about identity crisis and this has that in spades. Starting with Mima trying to gain a new identity as an actress instead of a singer, but the brutal show business pushes her boundaries and she looses her sense of self in the role she plays. In addition she discovers a website that appears to be run by someone pretending to be another version of her.
The gradual builtup of her descent into psychosis is well done and the plot remains interesting and tense with stalkers and a series of bloody murders happening around her. Reality, tv recordings, dreams and visions all blend convincingly together and the viewer develops a great deal of empathy for her tragic story.
