The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
I figured I had to watch this at some point and it easy to why it is currently the most popular Wes Anderson movie. He has perfected his unique visual style and combined it with an entertaining straightforward adventure story. I like how the entire movie is set up with a “sit down and let me tell you a story”. Too many writers and directors are obsessed with the “show don’t tell” mantra, but there is a time and place for old fashioned story telling - with chapters and voiceovers.
But beside that, this movie felt mostly flat to me - almost shallow. Even with Rushmore which I didn’t actually like, there was at least something to think about afterwards. Some thought provoking themes. This is better executed, more charming, a little funnier and a more entertaining and engaging narrative, but it also stops with that for me. Nice looking calories, just mostly empty.
