Hail, Caesar! (2016)

The Coen brothers does have all the elements for something interesting here, but it just never took off for me. It felt like it intended to be funny, but I only really laughed at the scene where they discuss whether the upcoming movie about the Christ will be offensive. The rest felt mostly uninteresting if not outright boring. I think it works the best outside the movie sets when Mannix is on screen, whereas the various “in-movie” scenes was often way too long. Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson doing their dance thing did nothing for me.

The many character storylines are mostly just buildup with little climax. Everything just sort of fizzles out to nothing. Mannix is the only one with a complete, and actually interesting story, and since he is the one silently pulling the strings for all the others, it does make sense to not fully develop everyone. I just think we spend too much time with story threads that feel pointless - making the whole movie boring and feeling longer than it is.
