Delicatessen (1991)

From the people behind Amélie ten years before this black comedy horror (something) is really something else. Everything is impeccably made. The comedic timing (which mostly comes from situational sillyness and not dialogue), the creative editing, the set design, the costumes, the color grading and the effects. All is flawlessly well made. The first half is absurdly funny, the second half excels in some impressive practical effects with lots of water.

It is very clearly made by the same people as Amelié but this is way more absurd and surreal, and not the least less charming and darker in tone. I cannot fault any individual scene, as they are all impressive for different reasons, but I never felt it all came together even though there is a sort of narrative that binds it all together. The first half was really funny and interesting, but the movie lost me a bit in the second half. The charming humor was gone and it lost some momentum with basically a drawn out kidnap and chase storyline.
