The Sisters Brothers (2018)

This movie took a while to settle for me. Needed to be about halfway in before I could really appreciate what it was doing. There are countless westerns showing almost invincible gunslingers that win every gunfight, but this is the first time I see a movie depicting those kind of characters in such a way. We see all their struggles outside the gunfight, the hardships of traveling through the wild landscapes, drinking problems and complicated sibling relationship. Like in Unforgiven it shows the traditional confident western antihero in a different light. It was refreshing to see them overtly talk about their feelings and dreams for the future. Westerns about the modern world catching up to these lawless men has been done for decades, but I haven’t seen it done here where family relationships are at the core of it. The entire cast is doing a fantastic job with their characters.

I do have some minor negative things with it, like the first hour didn’t grab me (might need a rewatch) and I think it is missing some sort of “western atmosphere”. The cinematography is most just serviceable and I am not really a fan of handheld camera for these types of movies, but that is just my preference. Objectively it is well made in that regard as well.
