But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)

After Happy Together I thought I might as well make this evening a double feature in Queer Cinema. It was interesting to see this after recently watching Barbie because it handled a similar subject way better - at least it was more my style of satire. I criticized Barbie for lacking subtlety with its message, and this is sort of the same in that it cranks up the satire for a very clear message, but somehow the way it was handled here worked way better for me. First of all, I was laughing constantly. The sexual innuendo, the intervention scene in the beginning, the awkward kissing and the outright silly conversion camp was nothing but hilarious. It is not simply laughs, there are genuine well made moments of love, intimacy, vulnerability and growth. I am likely just more in tune with the 90s way of making satire than the current way.
