Lady Bird (2017)
On most accounts I am not in the target group for this movie, as I can’t really relate to the American high school life, so it took me almost an hour to get properly settled into this movie and appreciate what it actually does.
It is teenagers being teenagers and struggling parents trying to do their best. All very convincingly played by every cast member. What I found set this apart from other “coming of age”-stories is how it shows the messiness, the doubts, the setbacks, the mistakes and the imperfectness of transitional periods in life. It is one step forward, a step back, a detour, maybe a dead end and not simply a big pivotal moment where you suddenly become an adult.
Also, it gave me an insight into what I believe is a somewhat accurate depiction of American high school life and the constant fear of getting into the right college, which seems to be a big mess with conflicting goals from oneself, parents, peers and society.
If anything, I could almost relate to the father, though I might need to rewatch it again in 10 years when I have kids at high school age myself.
