Pig (2021)

This movie really played well with my expecations. First of Nicolas Cage in a very different role and with a story that at first appears to turn into a John Wick style revenge violence spree, it is actually a very sad and melancholic movie about loss, food and nature. It made me think of the whole Michelin-level restaurant scene we have here in Copenhagen that has made great innovation with a “back to nature”-inspired cousine by making dishes out of literal moss, roots and ants. This movie seems to explore a bit of a similar conflict between the fancy restaurants with white tableclots and rich clientel, and the more raw wild nature where the food actually comes from.

The meat of the story is of course the back history of Rob which is cleverly gradually revealed throughout the 90 minute running time. We are led to believe at first he is some mean bastard with a reputation from decades past, but instead of using violence to get justice he uses - food. In itself I can appreciate that reversal of expectations, but even though it becomes quite clear that Rob is a man dealing with loss in his own way, his character was still too mysterious for me to become really invested.
