Nope (2022)

This was a fun movie going into without knowing much other than it was with the same actor and director as Get Out. The opening is just one long “what the hell is going on” - getting my attention from the start. The sound especially is very disconcerting. Then it moves into normal mode with a story about a struggling horse trainer in the Hollywood business. And things escalate into more weirdness from there.

I liked many things in this movie, the good looking pictures, the very stoic performance from Daniel was effective even though he barely shows any emotions, some of the creepy scenes were really eerie - the chimp in particular, and the overall very meta filmmaking theme on capturing images on analog mediums was intriguing.

But as a whole I didn’t quite see the point of it all. It never became fully horror like in Get Out and some of the CGI work almost ruined the whole analog-vibe the movie seem to aim for. I am also not entirely into the whole meta-trend that seems to be going on at the moment with movies about filmmaking. It makes for a few interesting scenes, but not much more than that.
