Decalogue I (1989)

I could relate to this short movie in several ways. I was fascinated by computers at around the same time and age as the young boy here, though my programs weren’t nearly as fancy. I can relate to the fathers very scientific views and have always considered myself an atheist. And I have kids that are starting to ask these impossible to answer questions about death.

I liked the story for its minimalism and very clear theme of being forced to question ones worldview. While I was never in doubt where the story was going and the foreshadowing of the tragedy was very apparent, so I was mostly prepared for it, Kieslowski really manages to tell a lot with the few resources he had for this tv production. I have previously mentioned that I found some of Kieslowskis movies were too vague, and this is the opposite - yet it never feels like the viewer is told what to think or feel. The minimalism of the production allows for the tragic story to speak for itself, and I am sure most viewers will see the question of science versus faith, but it is up to us to find out what it means for ourselves.
