Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
I knew practically nothing about this other than it was a Wes Anderson film and he is known for his very unique colorful style. This movie certainly delivered on that.
I am always impressed with stop motion production and this has to be the most impressive I have ever seen. The amount of beautiful details that have gone into the models and the lightning is striking.
Sadly, all the rest wasn’t near that level of perfection. The dialogue was quirky and witty, and I especially appreciated the sort of deadpan and direct way everone talked. No frills and no reading between the lines. But even so, I never felt any depth and even though it is a very short movie, it felt long. Probably because too much happens at a rapid pace. That paradox often happens for me, where I can lose any sense of time in a four hour epic with a simple story but be bored by shorter movies where lots of stuff is happening.
One could say style over substance, but in this case, the style was the substance and that is also okay.
