Black Narcissus (1947)
Didn’t expect this movie to turn out to be almost an erotic thriller. In glorious technicolor. The cinematography is groundbreaking and the acting feels more modern than from the 40s. I was especially impressed by Deborah Kerr and Kathleen Byron and their expression of restraint throughout the entire film. But besides it didn’t do much for me. The matte paintings look great but I wasn’t wowed like I have been with other technicolor films of that era. The pacing and editing was a little weird at times and I didn’t really catch on to the theme of British colonialism like many others seem to do. A fine historical groundbreaking film worth watching but didn’t become something special for me.
