A Short Film About Love (1988)

After being very impressed with the Three Colors trilogy, I wanted to try some older of Kieslowskis films. Obviously a story about love and it reminded me a good deal about Chungking Express by Wong Kar-Wai.

I think both films explores inexperienced young love that becomes an obsession, and when it is finally within grasp they can’t handle it. Tomek develops an unhealthy obsession with a woman he only observes from a distance. The woman seem to have regular sexual relationships but she wants something more.

On the surface the story is pretty problematic with how it shows a woman falling in love with her creepy stalker. However I don’t think it should be taken so literally or that the movie condone that kind of behavior from Tomek. It works as a frame for telling a story about two lonely people and how they can only look at other people and thinking that is what they want but the reality is different.
