Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)

The two performances in this film is amazing. Both so full of character, charm, personality, flaws, complexity and heart. Almost a one location film with a rather boring hotel set, but Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack steals the screen.

What I think the script does well with the setup of an older woman hiring a younger se worker, is that it allows to say something about what sex means to people without the need to be overly subtle or symbolic. Everything is frank and to the point, which was refreshing to see that communication about sex doesn’t need to be that complicated. While the words said between Leo and Nancy are very direct, their acting still adds a lot of hidden nuances and meanings to who they are outside this very closed scene.

I didn’t quite like parts of the ending though. Felt like it added an extra level of drama that wasn’t really needed and frankly spoiled how pure the first hour was. It didn’t ruin the movie but I just hoped that it didn’t went the way it did. Still worth watching and recommended. Perhaps not a movie to watch with your parents…
