Quigley Down Under (1990)

This movie really got off on the wrong foot in my opinion. The opening sort of hints at a straight forward but not entirely serious western with some close to slapstick humour. The score is quite obnoxious and sets that slightly light tone. However the story turns quite dark with dealing with the genocide of the Australian aboriginals - including some very grueling scenes showing these atrocities without holding anything back. Never seen anything like that. Sadly the movie doesn’t quite have the gravitas to carry that historical topic well. At the end of the day, it is just a very formulaic predictable western plot giving Tom Selleck an excuse to be a one man army. And he is great - so is Alan Rickman and Laura San Giacomo.
