Star Trek: Insurrection (1998)

I have always had a soft spot for this less liked TNG movie. Probably because it is less “movie-y” and more like a higher production double episode. In general, I have always liked the series better than the movies with Star Trek.

The story is classic Trek dilemma where the Federation are on the edge of their own principles and Picard stands up for what he believes is right - even though it is against orders. The movie make it pretty clearcut who we should root for, but one of the most interesting things about this is how divisive reviews are. Do the Baku have prime directive rights to a planet they are not native to? Is the admiral right that it is okay to move “only 600” people for the greater good? This question is put front and center when Picard directly asks him how many people it takes to become wrong.

I wish the script could have added some more nuance, because it is mostly presented very black and white with who we should sympathize with. The ending does bring some redemption to that, but it could have been handled better. It is not a perfect movie, but I think it is better than its rating.
